When Is Vinyl Flooring the Right Choice in Toronto?
Vinyl flooring installation in Toronto is our recommendation for the rooms where hardwood struggles. We are a Toronto hardwood refinishing and installation company first, and we will happily tell you when hardwood is the wrong call. Below-grade basements, laundry rooms, mudrooms, busy kitchens and high-turnover rental suites are all places where moisture, spills and wear make waterproof vinyl the smarter floor.
A Bendale landlord turning an unfinished basement into a rental suite asked us about hardwood. We talked them out of it. Waterproof LVP over a levelled subfloor, 450 sq ft, done in two days, and the tenant moved in on schedule.
What Types of Vinyl Do We Install?
| Type | Looks like | Best for | Installed price |
|---|---|---|---|
| LVP (luxury vinyl plank) | Wood | Basements, rentals, bedrooms | $5-$7/sq ft |
| Rigid-core SPC | Wood | Basements, uneven slabs, pets | $7-$10/sq ft |
| LVT (luxury vinyl tile) | Stone, tile | Kitchens, laundry, mudrooms | $8-$12/sq ft |
Every product we install is FloorScore certified for indoor air quality. We choose the wear layer, measured in mil, for your traffic: 12 mil for light use, 20 mil for most homes and 28 mil or more for busy kitchens and big dogs.
Why Subfloor Prep Matters for Vinyl
Vinyl is thin and flexible compared with hardwood, so it shows every dip, ridge and grout line underneath it. Click-lock joints also need a flat surface to stay locked. That is why we test the slab for moisture, check flatness with a straightedge, and use self-levelling compound where needed before a single plank goes down. On concrete, a moisture barrier goes underneath. Skipping this prep is the most common reason vinyl floors click, flex or separate at the seams.
How Much Does Vinyl Flooring Cost in Toronto?
Installed vinyl runs $5-$12 per sq ft, including standard underlayment. Removal of old carpet or tile and major levelling are listed separately on the written quote. For most basements and rental units, the job takes 1-2 days and the floor can be used immediately.
Vinyl or Laminate?
Both are budget-friendly alternatives to hardwood. Vinyl handles water far better, which makes it the choice for basements, kitchens and laundry rooms. Laminate flooring feels more like wood underfoot and resists scratches well, which suits dry above-grade rooms. For main living areas above grade, nothing beats real hardwood floor installation.
