## What Laminate Do We Install?

Our standard is **12mm AC4-rated click-lock laminate**. Here is why:

-   **12mm thickness** gives a deeper click joint, a more solid sound underfoot and better tolerance of small subfloor variations.
-   **AC4 abrasion rating** handles busy living rooms, kitchens and hallways. Cheaper AC2 and AC3 boards wear through faster in high-traffic lanes.
-   **HDF core** (high-density fibreboard) gives stability and dent resistance.

## How Do We Install It?

1.  **Check the subfloor.** Laminate needs a flat surface. We check with a straightedge and fix high and low spots.
2.  **Underlayment and vapor barrier.** Underlayment softens the sound and feel underfoot. Over concrete, a vapor barrier keeps slab moisture out of the HDF core.
3.  **Layout.** Planks run with the longest wall or main light, with joints staggered properly so the floor looks natural and stays strong.
4.  **Expansion gaps.** Laminate floats and moves with Toronto’s humidity swings, so we leave the correct gap at every wall, pipe and cabinet. Gaps that are too tight cause peaking and buckling.
5.  **Transitions and trim.** T-mouldings, reducers and new shoe moulding finish every edge cleanly.

What does AC4 mean?+

AC ratings measure abrasion resistance from AC1 to AC5. AC3 suits most bedrooms, AC4 handles busy living areas, kitchens and light commercial use, and AC5 is for heavy commercial. We recommend AC4 for nearly every home.

Why 12mm?+

Thicker laminate has a deeper click joint, sounds more solid underfoot and bridges minor subfloor imperfections better than 7-8mm boards.

Can laminate go in a basement?+

In a dry basement, yes, over a vapor barrier. In basements with any history of moisture or flooding, we recommend waterproof vinyl instead.

Can laminate go in kitchens?+

Water-resistant laminate with sealed edges can handle normal kitchen spills if wiped up. For laundry rooms and areas with standing water, vinyl is safer.

How long does installation take?+

Most rooms take 1-2 days, and the floor can be used immediately after installation.

Can laminate be refinished?+

No. Laminate has a printed image layer under a protective wear layer, so it cannot be sanded. When it wears out, it is replaced.

Is laminate good for rentals?+

Yes. It is affordable, scratch resistant and quick to install between tenants.

Do you remove old carpet?+

Yes. Carpet, pad, tack strip and staples are removed and the subfloor is checked before installation.
